BMW 328i TOURING (E36) - 1996 - MONTREALBLAU

A well preserved E36 Touring is not a common sight, let alone a 328i with a five-speed manual transmission, making this BMW a fun, useable future classic. Sitting at 260.000 km, this car spent the last eleven years with the same owner and has extensive maintenance records over that period. It has of course been given a comprehensive overhaul, thus ensuring it looks and drives as well as it should.

Exterior

Being a pre-LCI model, this car retains the very distinctive look of the earlier E36's with orange indicators and grey side skirts.

The exterior really stands out by its condition given its age, with only minor blemishes and imperfections on the “Montrealblau” paintwork, the most notable being a dent just beneath the left indicator (which most likely occurred while maneuvering). A few stone chips can be seen on the front fascia, as is to be expected with a car of this age and mileage.

A full detail was performed on the vehicle to really make it shine.

Interior

Outfitted in grey cloth, the interior has aged remarkably well. There are no tears in the fabric or cracks in the plastic.

The steering wheel along with the door cards were all professionally re-trimmed this summer. The floor mats and gearshift knob were replaced by new parts. All the interior plastic trim is in very good condition, and the glove box closes correctly.  The cloth seats and carpets are all in excellent condition, with no tears, and were comprehensively wet vac’ed.

A few dead pixels are to be noted on the onboard computer’s display, though this is not very relevant given this is the six-button variant with limited functionality.

Engine and drivetrain

Under the hood is the straight-six engine on which BMW has built its reputation : in this instance the single-VANOS M52B28 (making 193 hp) mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. Power delivery is consistent and gear selection is smooth.

As part of our overhaul, the cooling system has received some attention, including new hoses, fan blades, thermostat and expansion tank. The auxiliary belt and tensioner were also replaced; while the engine, gearbox and differential have of course had their fluids replaced as part of a major service.

Chassis and suspension

An E36 should be a joy to drive and we therefore made a point of focusing on this car's chassis. It has been fitted with new OEM Sachs dampers all around, new rear springs, fresh drop links and sway bar bushings. It is also fitted with brand new brake discs and pads, both front and rear. It now handles beautifully and proves a family car can be truly entertaining.

A full alignment has also been performed and four matching Uniroyal tires were fitted.

Just as importantly, the underpinnings of this car are extremely healthy which is so often not the case with these cars.
