GREAT ESTATE AUTOMOBILES

BMW 330i TOURING (E46) - 2001 - ORIENTBLAU

Combining good looks and excellent build quality, the E46 platform is from BMW’s golden era and is held in high regard by many. Equipped with the most powerful engine available (outside of the M3) and gifted with excellent dynamics, this 330i is a pleasure to drive. On a back road it will put a smile on your face while also covering long distances with modern comfort. While many similar cars are now in a dire state, this example has been well maintained and cared for. Many of the known reliability issues have been addressed, and the car has just gone through a major overhaul, therefor ensuring that it will cover many more miles.

Exterior

The Orient Blue paintwork absolutely makes this example stand out:  a deep dark colour with personality and class. With only a few defects, it has faired well over the years, and still looks stunning. This pre-LCI model came with clear indicators as a factory option, which give it a slightly more modern look.

The wheels, though not the original ones fitted to the car, are period correct for this model and also happen to be a more desirable factory design. Though they do exhibit some minor curb rash, they are overall in good condition and could easily be refurbished.

Badges, grilles and plastic trims have either been replaced or refurbished to ensure the car looks as sharp as possible.

Interior

In perfect contrast with the dark exterior, the light grey leather interior is a tasteful touch. Not only does it feel welcoming, it also brings some nice comfort equipment such as heated electric seats, an electric sunroof, and even a ski hatch. The factory head unit has been fitted with a Bluetooth receiver that enables high quality music streaming from your phone.

The seats are overall in good condition with some minor defects on bolsters, that can easily be fixed.

Engine and drivetrain

The M54B30 is undoubtedly one of BMW’s best powerplants. It’s ample power and torque are delivered with a smoothness only found in a Bavarian straight-six engine.

Most issues with these engines are well known and have usually been seen to as is the case with this example. The water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt and pulleys have all been replaced recently, as has been the oil filter housing gasket, cam-cover gasket, the fuel tank breather valve and the PCV system.

The ZF five-speed automatic gearbox is a robust unit. With a complete service done on it in 2022, it is now good to go for many years. For peace of mind, the rear differential oil has also been replaced.

Lastly, the DISA valve and idle actuator have also been checked (along with intake boots being replaced) as part of a major service including replacement of engine oil, all filters and sparkplugs.

Chassis and suspension

Extensive work has also been carried out on this front, and it can immediately be felt behind the wheel. With new Sachs OEM shock absorbers and front wishbones fitted less than 25000 kilometres ago, this car rides and handles remarkably and feels as fresh as it should. This overhaul was topped off prior to sale with the replacement of the front swaybar links.

New discs and pads were also fitted to the front recently, as well as four new tyres.

The car’s underpinnings look healthy and indicate it has been well kept.
