BMW 530i TOURING (E39) - 2002 - TITANSILBER
Widely considered to be one of BMW’s very finest models, the E39 offers a rare blend of refinement, quality and driving dynamics. In this instance, the Touring adds practicality over the sedan with no real penalties. And while the V8 versions offer marginally more power, the 530i has the benefit of handling thanks to its steering rack (instead of the recirculating ball system) and less weight over the front axle. These cars in good condition are getting hard to come by, and with 255.000 km, a stamped service book and a comprehensive overhaul, this example is certainly one of the better ones out there.
Exterior
Having left the factory in 2002, this is an LCI model and therefore premiered the desirable “angel eyes” that have since become the brand’s signature. With amber indicators, factory badge deletes and “Titansilber” paint, this example’s specification is very representative of the general sense of discretion and understatement that went with german cars of that era.
The body shows no major damage defects or scratches and is overall very presentable given it has been on the road for over twenty years. The wheels specifically are in excellent condition and have seemingly never been kerbed.
Interior
This car is fitted with anthracite cloth seats but don’t be fooled: it is very well appointed featuring a long list of equipment. Some are relatively common, such as park distance control, the electric sunroof, or the multifunction steering wheel; some are much rarer as for instance the sliding cargo floor.
The fabric upholstery is of course in excellent condition and offers an interesting alternative to the all-too-common black leather with its diamond shaped pattern. The original head unit has been replaced by a modern Android system that blends in very well, adding useful connectivity while retaining a factory look.
Engine and drivetrain
What better to power BMW’s finest 5-Series than one of the marque’s very best straight-six engines? The M54B30 delivers 231 hp to the ZF five-speed automatic transmission, offering remarkable smoothness, great cruising ability and a satisfying amount of punch.
This engine’s weaknesses are well known and most of them have been addressed recently: it has a new DISA valve, PCV system, camcover, viscous coupler and radiator hoses. The fuel injectors have been cleaned and the o-rings replaced. Last, it has received a major service including engine and differential oil replacement, all filters, and spark plugs.
Chassis and suspension
The E39 is known for having great road manners which rely on a sophisticated front axle setup, that also happens to wear and degrade over time. In this instance, we opted to replace all the front arms using quality parts, along with the front and rear sway bar links and bushings. A full alignment has of course been carried out since and the car drives perfectly.
New discs and pads were also fitted to the front recently, as were the rear air springs. The car’s underpinnings look healthy and indicate it has been well kept.
